Replacing a Mailbox Is More Involved Than Most People Realize.
If you’ve never done it before, you may not realize what is actually involved in replacing a mailbox. It becomes even more difficult without specialized tools. To do it correctly, the installer must:
Contact utility companies to ensure the site does not contain buried cable, electric, water or gas lines. Not doing this can have consequences that range from a nuisance to a very dangerous situation.
Dig out the old post. Old posts are often set in concrete which can be a challenge without power tools to break up the concrete. Additionally, while digging the hole for the new mailbox you will often encounter large rocks or concrete from previous mailboxes.
Ensure USPS requirements are followed. The United States Post Office (USPS) has specific height and setback requirements for mailboxes. Don’t assume the hole will be in the same spot as the old mailbox. It must be placed the correct distance from the curb to ensure that the finished installation will put the front of the mailbox at the correct curb setback per USPS requirements.
Set the new post in concrete. To ensure your mailbox looks great for years, I always set mailbox posts in concrete. This ensures it will look great for years and not end up slumped out toward the street after several seasons of freeze / thaw cycles.
Ensure the post is level and plumb. The biggest difference between a professional job and a DIY job is ensuring that the post stays level, plumb, and square to the street until the cement has cured. Putting in all the work only to come out in the morning and see a crooked post that is now permanently set in concrete can be a real disappointment.
