Chadds Ford reflects centuries of Pennsylvania history. Originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native American tribe, the area was settled by English Quakers including the Brinton and Gilpin families in the late 17th century. The community takes its name from the Chadsey family, whose association with a key ford on the Brandywine River dates to the 1700s. John Chads operated a ferry service across the Brandywine in the late 1730s and 1740s, establishing the crossing place that became known as Chadds Ford. Around 1827, a bridge replaced the ferry service.

The Revolutionary War left an indelible mark on the township. On September 11, 1777, the Battle of Brandywine was fought near Chadds Ford. General George Washington chose this location to halt the British advance toward Philadelphia. General William Howe split his forces to outflank the Continental army. After fierce fighting, Americans retreated to Chester and the British camped on the battlefield for five days, ransacking nearby homes. The Brandywine Battlefield State Park now encompasses 52 acres at the epicenter of the fighting, featuring the Benjamin Ring House, which served as Washington's headquarters, plus a visitor center with exhibits and guided tours.

In the 1800s, waterpower from the Brandywine River drove mill operations producing gunpowder, paper, grain processing, and timber. At the turn of the century, kaolin mining for fine white potter's clay brought additional development. The railroad arrival in 1858 transformed Chadds Ford from isolated farmland into a desirable retreat for Philadelphia and Wilmington residents.

During the early 1900s, Howard Pyle established a renowned summer art school in Chadds Ford. Among his students was the young N.C. Wyeth from Massachusetts, who came to study and decided to stay. From Pyle's studio and students, the famous Brandywine School of Art developed. The Wyeth family including Andrew Wyeth and grandson Jamie Wyeth continued fostering this artistic legacy for generations. The Brandywine River Museum, founded in 1971 within the renovated Hoffman's Mill, houses extensive works by the Wyeth family and other Brandywine School artists.

Today Chadds Ford remains 92 percent residential with careful attention to historic preservation and natural landscapes. The Chadds Ford Historic District, Gilpin Homestead, John Chads House, and William Painter Farm are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
